Mercy Otis Warren was a poet, playwright and screenwriter during the American Revolution. During the years leading up to the American Revolution, Warren published poems and plays that attacked Massachusetts' royal power and called on the settlers to resist acts that violated British rights and freedoms. She is married to James Warren, who is also active in the independence movement. During the 1788 US Constitutional debate, she published a pamphlet, Observations on the New Constitution, and on Federal and State Conventions under the pseudonym "A Colombian Patriot. ", object to document ratification and call for the inclusion of a bill of rights. Visits have long been attributed to the work of other writers, especially Elbridge Gerry. It was not until his descendant, Charles Warren, found the reference in a 1787 letter to the English historian Catharine Macaulay that Warren was recognized as an author.
